Why Your Burnout is Your Responsibility

Your burnout is your responsibility…

  • Does it sting a little reading that?

  • Do you want to give me a little slap of the face for saying that?

  • Of course it does! Of course you do!

And this is why it’s included in the Truth Bomb Tuesdays segment. HOWEVER, I’ll start right off with saying, while your burnout is your responsibility to fix, you are not likely the one responsible for it happening… let me explain.

The REASON for your burnout may not (and likely isn’t) all your fault, but the only way to GET OUT of burnout is by you taking responsibility.

Often times when we are deep in burnout and overwhelm, there can be a trap of (unconsciously) believing that someone is going to save us. We secretly hope that our boss will finally understand the workload, that our partners will pick up some extra around the house, that if we buy the latest Brene Brown book - her words will somehow finally transform us.

We can get stuck in this place of hoping someone else will fix us and pull us out of our misery.

There is one giant problem with hoping someone else will save us from our burnout. It is 100% out of your control. And as my clients know, when something is out of your control - any time, thought or energy you put towards it is a waste of your own energy. Because you have no control over what others do. We can try to argue that fact, say that we can influence others to do things, or this, that and the other. But let me save you a decade of struggle and just tell you - you are best off focusing on what you can control. I promise you as I’ve “been there, done that struggle train.”

So, now that we’ve talked about moving away from hoping others will save you or blaming others for your burnout - let’s talk about the juicy stuff. The stuff that has the major potential to transform your stress and overwhelm. Hint: it’s YOU!

As we build on this concept, the thing to keep in mind is: this all lies in one huge shift:

You’re moving away from focusing all of your energy on hoping things outside of your control will change and, instead, begin to move towards focusing your energy on what is within your control.  And in that place my friend (what’s in your control) is where your transformation lies.

So, the sooner you’re ready to own that fixing your burnout is your responsibility – the faster you are on your way to alleviating it. When you feel hopeless, you won’t take action to change. When you know you are the one (and only one) who can change your trajectory – it’s game on baby!

Because you already know you can do hard things. Look at all you’ve done and accomplished in your life!

*And did you know, you don’t have to do this alone?!*
